Example: Age of Aquarius (Moldovan 2001) 28" M Re 5.5" Lavender mauve blend with mauve cream watermark and white edge above light yellow to green throat. DOR. BR 6 BD 40. Tetraploid. [(Madame Curie x Dunedin) X Noble Lady]. HM2005. $32.00
Trait Example shown above Explanation
Cultivar Age of Aquarius Name of daylily.

Most of our daylilies have names officially registered with the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS), the entity responsible for the registration of daylily names worldwide. An unregistered daylily may not be exhibited in an official AHS daylily exhibition, nor is it eligible to receive AHS awards. See also More About Daylilies.

Hybridizer
and Year of registration

(Moldovan 2001) Last name of hybridizer or originator is listed.

First initial is added if an earlier hybridizer has the same last name. When two or more people are responsible for registration, the last names are separated by a hyphen.If the listing says "Unreg." instead of a year, it means the daylily has not been registered by the hybridizer.

Height 28" Scape height is indicated by the first number.
Bloom Season M Bloom Seasons are indicated by the following letter(s):
EE=extra early; E=early; EM=early mid; M=mid season; ML=mid late; L=late; VL=very late.

Bloom season begins and ends according to location, but the sequence is the same.

Re (Rebloom) None in example Re=Rebloom.

When "Re" appear after the letter(s) for bloom season, it means the daylily is capable of rebloom. A daylily that reblooms may produce one or more set of bloom scapes in addition to initial bloom scapes. (Rebloom is not typically reliable in cold climates.)

Flower Diameter 5.5" Flower Diameter is indicated by the second number.

The flower is measured as the bloom stands naturally.

Description Lavender mauve blend with mauve cream watermark and white edge above light yellow to green throat. Description provides color information.
Color is indicated in mass and for eyezone, edge, throat, pattern.
Foliage Habit DOR. Foliage habit is indicated by DOR., EV., or SEV.

DOR=Dormant: The daylily loses its foliage completely for winter and overwinters with pointed buds just beneath the soil and resumes growth in spring.

EV=Evergreen: The daylily retains its foliage throughout the year in mild climates. In cold climates, the foliage becomes a frozen mound. Evergreen foliage resumes growth when temperatures permit, e.g., during a mid-winter thaw.

SEV=Semi-evergreen: The foliage dies close to the ground during winter and resumes growth during spring.

Other Traits BR 6 BD 40 Daylilies may have one or more of the following traits listed. The listings are based on how the daylily was registered by the originator. Daylily performance will vary according to location.

BR=Number of branches; BD=Number of buds
FRAG=Fragrant; VFRAG=Very Fragrant
EXT=extended bloom (open at least 16 hours)
NOC=nocturnal (open during night)
DIU=diurnal (opens during day; this is typical but not usually indicated)

Forms None listed in example; it has a typical form.
Unusual Form (often abbreviated as UF)
Indicates a flower that exhibits unusual form characteristics on at least three sepals or at least three petals:
Crispate forms have pinched, twisted, or quilled floral segments.
Cascading forms have narrow, curling segments.
Spatulate forms have segments markedly wider at the end.

Spider

Indicates that floral segments are long and narrow. Spiders must meet a minimum petal length-to-width ratio of 4.0:1 (i.e., petals must be 4 times as long as they are wide).

Polytepal
Indicates the flower has more than the typical three sepals with a matching number of petals. The number of anthers match the combined number of petals and sepals, but the flower has only one pistil.
Ploidy Tetraploid Diploid or Tetraploid
Indicates the number of chromosomes in the cultivar. Diploids (also called dips) have 22 chromosomes while tetraploids (also called tets) have double that number, i.e., 44. When selecting cultivars for breeding, use dips with dips and tets with tets.
Parent cultivars [(Madame Curie x Dunedin) X Noble Lady] Parentage is provided when known.
The order used is (Pod Parent X Pollen Parent), with an upper case "X" between final generation. If more generations are listed, they are shown in additional sets of brackets and use a lower case "x".
Awards HM2005

Awards won from the American Daylily Society (ADS)
This daylily won an Honorable Mention in 2005.

ADS uses an awards and honors system with trained judges who vote by ballot to determine winners for most cultivar awards each year. The Honorable Mention is the first step toward the highest honor; the Award of Merit is the second highest; and the Stout Silver Medal is the highest award. Other Specialty Awards recognize daylilies that excel in a range of categories. Awards change over time, reflecting changes in breeding goals, so some awards have been discontinued while new awards have been added.

See more details about ADS daylily awards in More About Daylilies.

For more about AHS awards, see the AHS website: American Daylily Society.
